Seashore Thoughts
I guess with a name like Shore I was destined to love the sea. Over the years it’s been a great source of inspiration and a favorite theme in my work. And I can explore it in a lot of different ways, from whimsical depictions of Santa in a bathing suit to more traditional scenes of turtles or pelicans or even sharks. It’s a theme that I love and I’m not alone! When I travel to signing events around the country, even landlocked places like West Virginia or Tennessee, I always see plenty of folks with a favorite sea-going gnome or Snoopy-at-the-beach or Little Mermaid design to be signed. No matter how far away we are, images of the sea seem to reach out to us.
I have a couple of my own theories as to why that might be. One is based on tradition. As Americans many of our ancestors came across the sea one way or another. Our history is deeply connected to it, images of lighthouses and sailing ships are important links to our past. It’s a shared heritage. But there may be a simpler reason. It sounds obvious but I think we love the sea because it’s beautiful. No need to over think this! We have a God given gift to appreciate the beauty we see. Some gifts are just meant to be enjoyed!
God bless,
